President of the Province

When, on 30 June 2001,
the International Conference on
Sustainable Tourism approved the “Rimini Charter”, we were fully
aware that we had been called
upon to shoulder the biggest
responsibility that can fall on
those in governing positions:
that of coherence, of turning
surveys and words into a
tangible reality.
A responsibility that was
welcomed by the Rimini area
which was fully aware of the fact that discussing sustainability
in a mass tourism
context meant bringing any

The Rimini experience

The Province of Rimini, starting
with the international Conference
staged in June 2001, which
produced the "Rimini Charter
for Sustainable Tourism" has
given a concrete demonstration
of its commitment in favour of a sustainable tourism model.
A commitment acknowledged
in Europe and the Mediterranean
Basin that has produced numerous
major partnerships (UNWTO, UNEP, European Commission, TOI and ICLEI).
A commitment which, over recent
years, has resulted in the first
evaluation of tourism carrying
capacity in a mass tourist
destination of the Mediterranean,
a coastal area integrated
management plan using ICZM
methods, guidalines and
manuals for tourist operators
with the aim of cushioning the
environmental impact of the
services provided.
